How to Press Accurately for Quilting:

Your Secret Weapon for Perfect Piecing

When it comes to quilting, cutting precisely and sewing a consistent seam are often praised as the foundations of great work. But there's another crucial — and often underestimated — step that can make or break your quilt blocks: pressing. Not ironing, but pressing.

Pressing accurately might not be the flashiest part of quilting, but it plays a huge role in helping your seams nest properly, your blocks lay flat, and your piecing line up just right. Let’s dive into what accurate pressing looks like and how to incorporate it into your quilting routine.

Pressing vs. Ironing: Know the Difference

Before we go further, it’s important to distinguish between pressing and ironing. Ironing involves moving the iron back and forth across the fabric. That motion can stretch and distort your fabric or seams. Pressing, on the other hand, means lifting the iron and gently pressing it down — no sliding.

This small shift in technique can preserve the accuracy of your blocks and help maintain square corners and even lines.

Tools That Help You Press Like a Pro

You don’t need an arsenal of gadgets, but a few well-chosen tools can make pressing more effective and enjoyable:

  • A hot, reliable iron – Steam is optional and can be helpful, but some quilters prefer a dry press with a spritz of water or starch alternative.

  • A wool pressing mat – These help absorb heat and press both sides of the fabric at once.

  • Tailor’s clapper – This wooden block helps set seams crisply and prevents puffiness.

  • Spray starch or pressing spray – These can stabilize fabric and help seams stay crisp.

  • Seam roller (for delicate or tight areas) – A great tool to flatten seams without heat.

Step-by-Step Guide to Accurate Pressing

1. Set Your Seams

Before you open a freshly sewn seam, press directly on the stitching line with your iron. This “sets” the stitches into the fabric and helps the seam lie flatter when pressed open or to the side.

2. Decide Which Way to Press

You can press seams:

  • To one side (often toward the darker fabric) – This helps with nesting seams and adds strength.

  • Open – This reduces bulk, especially in intersecting seams, and can improve precision.

Consistency is key — whatever method you choose, stick with it throughout your project.

3. Finger Press First

Use your fingers to gently open or fold the seam before bringing in the iron. This gives you more control and reduces the risk of accidentally pressing a fold or pleat into the fabric.

4. Use the Right Pressure and Motion

Place the iron on the seam and let the heat do the work. Avoid dragging or shifting the fabric. Hold the iron in place for a few seconds, then lift and move it to the next section.

5. Let It Cool

Let the fabric cool on a flat surface before moving it. This helps set the seam and ensures it stays crisp and flat.

Bonus Tips for Seam Accuracy

  • Press after every seam – It might seem like a lot of stopping and starting, but it’s worth it. Pressing as you go keeps your quilt top flat and accurate.

  • Watch for wonky blocks – If something looks off, re-pressing (or unpicking and resewing) can sometimes fix the problem before it grows.

  • Practice makes perfect – Like any quilting skill, pressing improves with attention and experience.

In Conclusion: Pressing Matters

Accurate pressing is more than just a way to flatten seams — it’s a vital step in ensuring your blocks are the correct size, your points match, and your quilt top looks polished and professional. Taking a little extra time at the ironing board can save you a lot of frustration later.

So the next time you’re tempted to skip the iron and keep sewing, remember: beautifully pressed seams are the unsung heroes of stunning quilts.

Learning to Retreat

I returned recently from my Michigan Retreat.  What an awesome group of women.  They came to get work done, to see friends and spend time catching up on each others lives, to see the projects everyone is working on, learn something new as well as to rest, relax and renew.  From my viewpoint that all happened in the most delightful way.  I honestly laughed so hard at a few points my sides hurt.  I came home refreshed and hopefully each of them did too.

It is so important to take time out from the stresses of our lives and retreat so that we can renew and refresh ourselves.  My son and his family recently moved to a new town and lifestyle.  Their son has been experiencing the stress of it all with whining and crying, etc.  They have had to give him time-outs from time to time so he could settle down and relieve some of that stress.  As I was updating the retreat page here I thought about time outs and how important they are.  Our bodies need rest as well as our minds so that we can cope with all that life throws at us, both the good and the bad.

My prayer for you is that you put retreat time into your schedule and experience that life giving renewal it brings.

Blessings and Joy!

Renew

It has been a long two years and it has gone by quickly.  Is that possible?  I am ready for getting back to something that looks like normal without the tension of masks, getting sick and taking care of others and self through all of the concerns that Covid has brought.

My retreats are back with precautions in place and renewed energy for making them happen.  Please check out the retreats page for the details.  I am excited to see old friends and making new ones.

As 2022 gets underway may you look forward to it in Hope and gratitude.

Blessings to all of you.

On the Move

Once again we are on the move to a new area and home.  We are leaving Southern California to return to Northern California in the greater Bay Area.

We are making an effort to purge a lot this time.  It is hard work both physically and emotionally but it feels good.  I'm looking forward to setting up house with a bit less baggage.

GOOD NEWS!!  The Michigan Fall Quilting Retreat is on for October 3-6, 2021.  You can find information on the retreat page of this blog.  I'm so looking forward to reconnecting with these ladies and meeting new friends.

Have a safe and blessed 4th of July!

Change

So many things in life change whether we want them to or not.   I sometimes find myself wishing I could stop change from happening and to some extent I could do something about changes that I have control of.  But this is really about change that happens that I don't have control of, like getting older.

My husband has decided to retire.  We are at that age!  We have been very busy learning what that means and doing all the necessary paperwork to make that happen and asking a million questions and searching to find the right answers.  It's exhausting.

We will be making a move and so the search began and that is a full time job itself.  With the help of a dear friend we have that covered for now.

I have made some changes in my own career pursuits.  I will be ending my teaching at the college with this spring semester and will miss my students immensely.  I started teaching on Facebook Live in January and will continue to do for The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims. This has been a lot of fun and am so glad I don't have to change that right now.  Once settled in our new home I will pursue other options that might be available.  The retreats will continue when the Covid restrictions end and am looking forward to that.

My hope is that as changes come into your life you will find the good in them, rejoice in the new and continue to pursue your dreams no matter where you are or what circumstances life brings you.

Blessings to you all,

Dee

Building a Quilt

I think we all want the finished product.  That quilt that knocked our socks off and made us buy the pattern or take the class is what we want and we really don't think a whole lot initially about the steps it will take to wrap the finished product around us and give us warmth.

For me it is like reading a well written and engaging book.  Do you roll your eyes at those readers who read the last chapter first and know that's not how you read a book.  Roll your eyes at me then because I can be one of those-here's why.  Sometimes, I engage in a book and the characters are being developed along with the plot and I don't get them and so an inkling of frustration sets in and to alleviate that I read the last chapter and I get it.  Now I can go back and delve into the characters and understand what is happening as a result of their personality, circumstance, etc. and the book is now more enjoyable for me because I can get lost in the characters and plot without being frustrated.  When the ending comes sometimes I am still surprised by how it all wrapped up.

A beautiful quilt can do that for me too.  Sometimes I jump right in before I have a good handle on the steps involved in creating the masterpiece.  The seam ripper gets used, blocks end up in the trash and thread and scraps are all over the floor. Authors have an ending in mind or where they want the book to go and they create the scenarios and emotions to get you there.  They have to pay attention to all the nuts and bolts of being a good writer, like grammar and sentence structure and so on.  We as quilters need to do the same thing.  We need to know about how to get an accurate 1/4" seam, pressing, cutting, etc. but the creation and the end result is all you.  It's yours and yours alone.

Read your pattern all the way through.  Every last word and picture.

Ask yourself how you can make it your own.

Do I have techniques I'd rather use than how they did it.

Gather your equipment in one place

Create your masterpiece

Steep the tea, wrap yourself in your masterpiece and read a good book.  No judgement if you read the ending first.😀

What has always been is not necessarily always best.

Blessings,

Dee

Working Hard or Delighting in our Work?

It has been a long time since I have added anything to this blog.  I have allowed many things to get in the way with one of them being myself.  It became just another thing on my "to do" list and I kept pushing it to the bottom because I thought other items were more important.  Have you ever done that?

With Covid and a new way of teaching to learn and getting up to date with technology I have felt tired and overwhelmed and not finding much joy in the day to day accomplishments.  I have been diligent with the "have to's" working hard to get it all done, checking off items on my list.

And then I read a devotion on Diligence and my thinking has taken a shift.  The word diligent comes from the latin word diligere, which means "to value highly, take delight in".  In the English definition it means "careful and serious in your work, or done in a careful and determined way".  I have been asking myself what if I really starting caring about my work and finding delight in it?  Would that change how I got things done?  Could I find the joy again?  After pondering on those questions for a few days I felt like I needed to put my heart back in my work and really begin intentionally caring for and loving the people I was doing the work for.  I'm feeling a change happening.  I hope you experience it from me.

Find joy in all things, big and small!

Sewing Around Those Curves

The college class has been working on sewing curved seams.  Above is a project from the Quilt Pattern, Dreamweaver by Michelle McKillop.  This has been so much fun and a lot easier than they thought was possible.  The drunkards path is another great block to make such creative designs and use up scraps.

When tackling a new technique think positive thoughts and know you can accomplish it.  So many times we sabotage ourselves out of fear of failure.  It is true that sometimes the first try at something may not turn out like you hoped but if you keep at it you will learn and grow your skills.

Keep dreaming - sewing - creating - growing!

An artists job is to make it - not judge it.

Stringing Along

My students at a local community college have joined the string quilt craze.  They are all making some very lovely blocks that they will design a quilt from.

If you haven't started yet it is a great way to use up your stash and oh so fun to sew.  I will add some pictures along the way.

Making Time

It has been a while since you have heard from me.  It is because I haven't been making the time and setting this as a priority.  Hard to say that and I know it will be difficult to change this bad habit but I am working on it.

Since my last post the baby is here and it is wonderful being a Grandma.

Isn't he just about the cutest thing you've ever seen?  He is so very happy and a delight.  My son and his wife are such wonderful, loving and relaxed parents.  It is amazing watching your children become parents.

Since my last post I took a position at Santiago Canyon College teaching quilting and textile art.  It keeps me unbelievably busy and I get to work with some delightful students.  At the present we are following the string quilting craze and using up our stash.  I have found so many great settings for string quilts that it will be hard for me to decide which setting to do.  I'm sure my students would agree.  Here is part of my growing pile so far.

Here are a couple ideas I've been working on lately to get back on track.  Maybe they will be helpful to you as well.

Cleaning my sewing work space (which includes some organization).

List my projects and supplies I'll need and putting everything together so I can get right to work. I am including the "have to's" for my teaching as well as the things I want to make for fun.  Balance I am finding keeps the sewing fun.

Scheduling time for the other things I enjoy like gardening and reading and creating art.

May your days be filled with meaningful work and enjoyable relaxing time.

Blessings,
Dee

Retreats and Baby, Oh My!

The Summer Retreat is over and what a great group of women and fabulous projects that were started and completed.

Right after the retreat I threw a baby shower for my daughter-in-law.  It was a beautiful day and she looked gorgeous.  The bear she is holding in the above picture was my son's favorite stuffed animal and went everywhere with it.  She had the exact same bear as a child.  What are the odds of that?

In two weeks I will be starting a new adventure with teaching quilting classes at the local community college.  I am getting excited to be a part of the academia world again.

May all your days be blessed.

One Thing

In the last few months I have had many different things to get accomplished.  It has been overwhelming for me and frustrating.  I tend to get that way when I don't organize myself and prioritize.  Do you ever feel that way?  Today as I was once again flitting about from "thing" to "thing" and not really getting much done on any one of them. I finally called a halt to the insanity.

The second crippling thing in my life is the "self beating up process".  I start thinking about all the things I'm not doing and the worries of living and making a living and...and...to the point that it keeps me from the day to day stuff that is ordinary and daily routine.  So I pulled up my "boot straps" (I guess here it would be my sandal straps) and reminded myself I don't need to do everything at once.

I can only do one thing at a time.  So today my one thing is going to be to finish putting the beads on my moon for the retreat wall hanging and if I get to another item on the list I can rejoice and do my personal happy dance.  Making this decision has made my heart happy.

I'm happy too because this is the second thing on my list, so you know what that means - I finished the beading.🎊🎉🎈

The other "thing" I am going to start including in my daily routine is to write my "to do" list the night before so I can jump right in to my day with devotional and inspiration time.  My husband has been trying to get me to write my lists the night before for years.  I guess you can always start new habits at any point in life.

My current devotion book is "Your Life, God's Home by Nancie Carmichael
Inspiration is going to be "The Daily Book of Art: 365 readings that teach, inspire and entertain"

Innovative

This year I am going to work on quilting more of my own quilts.  A little scary for me.  I started with straight line quilting.  I do not have fancy rulers to help me but I found my Quilters Select ruler with its magical grip to work quite well.  I know that most free form quilters prefer rulers they can easily move around as they work but the grip helped me so much with keeping my lines straighter.  This one is done-not great but not bad for a larger quilt and first time attempt.

Do you have anything special you are going to be working on this year?

Going Green

This is the leftover pile of scraps from a paper pieced sampler I made.  As I looked at it I'm thinking there is a another quilt laying here and my conscience wouldn't let me throw it away.  I will admit I don't have the quilt(s) completed yet but they are well on their way.
I started randomly sewing the lopsided triangles together to create strips of new fabric.  I had enough to make 4 strips approximately 70 inches long.  I trimmed them down to 5 inches because that is what I could get out of the strips.  Those leftovers I did throw away.  I'm not totally crazy. :).  Now what to do with them.

As you will see in the picture I auditioned them with a print and tiny black inner border and I liked that but I also liked the solid magentas one as well.  Either would make a lovely strip quilt or I could cut 5 inch squares for a fun four or nine patch quilt.  I decided to go with the strips.  I used 3 of the 4 strips for this quilt along with the magenta fabric with the print as a border.  I haven't finished yet but that is what I plan to do.

With the fourth strip I located this unused panel and decided I would cut my strip into smaller strips and use it as an inner border or accent for this panel.  I'm sure I will have some little strips left over.  What could I do with them?

Please share your thoughts and possible ideas that you could do with a large pile of leftover scraps from a quilt.  I would love to know how you might use them.

Blessings!

It's All New!

It shouldn't but it always amazes me how fast time goes by.  Since September I have been to Virginia Beach and experienced the Art and Soul retreat, hosted my fall quilt retreat in Michigan, had family for Thanksgiving, finished unpacking and moving into our rental in CA and took a trip to Northern California for Christmas.  In Between those things planning for the upcoming spring retreats (3) has been underway and I've taught some classes.  It was a good finish to 2017.

The last few years I have been following the trend of choosing a word that will guide me through the year instead of creating resolutions.  My 2018 word is "Growth".  It is time for me to grow in new directions artistically, personally and spiritually.  I'm intrigued by how this year of growth will go.

My next post will be pictures and ideas for that large pile of scraps I shared on Instagram.(3cherriesontop)

May you and the ones you love be Blessed.

Plum Crazy

A new pattern is coming soon.  I will introduce it at my fall retreat in Lawton, Michigan.  It's a simple quilt but very striking.

This next week I will be busy getting ready for the retreat and to go to the Art and Soul Retreat in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  This is something I have always wanted to do and I am so excited that I am getting the opportunity.  I am focusing on mixed media, watercolor and textile art in the sessions I will be taking.  I really can't wait!!!

I will be posting pictures here and on my Instagram account, 3 cherries on top.

Daily Change

Since the last week of June every day has been a surprise and filled with change.  We have moved from Michigan back to California and in that span of time and so much has taken place in between.

The movers were three days late coming in MI and took two days longer than they were suppose to which turned all of our well laid plans upside down and in a tailspin.  This move did not go smoothly or easily and I can say it feels good to have it behind us.  We are still unpacking boxes and trying to decide where everything should go and what we need to let go of.

My California quilt retreat was a great success.  It is always good to return to St. Francis and spend time with such dear friends and meeting new friends each year. Planning for the fall retreat in Michigan has begun in earnest and already looking forward to being there and seeing good friends and catching up with everyone.

Our children had a surprise welcome back to California party for us on Saturday.  It was wonderful to see everyone and to be able to have both children together.  The best part of being back in CA for us is being able to be closer to them.  What joy!

May the changes that are coming your way be welcome ones and bring new joys and delights to your days.

Blessings,
Dee

New Fabric

Scrolling through some of the artists I follow and saw these two lines of fabric that are new and I thought you might like to see the fabric I am falling in love with.

Each has started me dreaming of what I might create from them.  What do you think?

Have a wonderful creative day!

Something New

It is time for another new beginning brought on by our move back west.  Today with help from a friend I started a new Instagram account to share my art, quilts and a variety of future art endeavors.  I called it 3cherriesontop.  When my daughter was young and we would go out for dinner we would sometimes allow her a special treat of 7up.  She would ask if it was a special dinner and if we said yes she would ask the waitress for a "7up coke with three cherries on top, please".  I hope as I start this next adventure it will be special and my three cherries on top, please.

Above is my profile picture and I hope you will take the time to check it out and maybe even follow me.  I'm just getting started so there isn't much there yet but just you wait and see...

Fun Stripes

Just  finished a top for the July Quilt Retreat.  I still need to find borders and a backing but still trying to decide if I want to go more traditional or have a bit of fun with it.

I've been also spending time getting the house in order to put it on the market. I sure am going to miss having all the space I have now in my quilting room, but very excited to be back closer to my children.  Moving has always been bittersweet for me.  I hate leaving friends and the work and activities I am involved with and there will be many from here.  I do look forward to new friends and activities as well.

Keep Quilting and enjoying the Spring weather!

Blessings,
Dee
